The newest crop of AMD graphics cards are now for sale. The Ryzen 5000 line is the newest advancement from the chipmaker, is available in two flavors. The first, the eight-core Ryzen 7 5700G, is retailing for $359. The second, the six-core Ryzen 5 5600G, is for sale for just $259, making it a significantly more affordable option.
However, these prices are something of a joke when you consider the realities of the GPU market right now. If you’re able to find one of these graphics cards for MSRP, then you’re one of the luckiest people on the planet, or you’re running automated scripts that buy up supply as soon as it goes on sale.
The bizarre nature of the past 18 months has devastated microchip manufacturing. Shutdowns of major chip manufacturers created a massive bottleneck in production, while increased demand for electronics across the board constrained supply greatly.
This has led to a situation where nearly every electronic device is significantly more expensive than it usually would be. Microchips are used in pretty much everything from phones to cars to, of course, graphics cards. And, indeed, GPUs have felt the harshest effects of this shortage, with many older graphics cards currently selling for double retail or more on secondhand sites.
GPUs sit at a strange intersection of being useful for leisure activities and being used for cryptocurrency mining. While only the very best graphics cards get bought up for mining, this extreme pressure on the top end of cards causes a ripple effect in the market. Power gamers can’t reasonably get their hands on top-of-the-line cards, so they buy the next-best thing.
This continues down the line, constraining the supply of graphics cards even more, on top of the existing chip shortage. Then, resellers, seeing a chance to make a quick buck, catch wind of the situation, rolling out the automated scripts to buy up industrial quantities of graphics cards. They then turn around and list these cards for a significant markup on sites like eBay.
So, while AMD’s Ryzen 5000 line might be a lower-end set of GPUs, it’s still going to be nearly impossible to find. The market for graphics cards is unbelievably constrained presently, with far more demand than supply. Expect to pay well over retail if you want to get your hands on any new graphics cards in the near future.
